black and brown, deadly medley are certified classics.
this might really become the album of the year.
black milk, you’re really on some j dilla state of mind recently. big ups. one of the few artists who’s improving with each new album.

Word! I wholeheartedly agree with Owusu. Maybe when Black initially debuted with BR Gunna, he was on some Dilla shit, but now he is in his OWN lane, honing his OWN sound. Each album, he further detaches himself from the concept of being a Dilla successor, and I think that’s the best thing for him as an artist. I can’t wait for this album.

Although magazine XXL rated this album “XL”, they said it’s not that good that it can be Album Of The Year.

But what i heard right now, is eargasm.
No dissrespect, but for me: AOTY > HIGO (although HIGO is mega dope album!)

about to cop AOTY right now…
thank you Black Milk for making that dope music.

Thanks so much to everyone for the thoughtful comments. Really glad y’all feelin’ the music and supporting my evolution as an artist. Means a lot.

@Leon The CD will be available in some Best Buys. You can also buy it straight from the online store on this site.

@Tony & Owusu Thanks for recognizing that I’ve developed a sound that’s uniquely mine.

Everyone else, thanks for the support!

I’m not gonna hate, he has improved, found new interesting sounds, live drums really helped the production BUT.. Is it me or is it as if Black is more interested in telling us how much better he is than everybody else when it’s just not that complicated. I mean the Reps in boot camp were doing those flows years ago – check out for the people. He sounds like a whiny Jay-Z but less intelligent, keeps repeating himself and depends to much on cheap Pro Tools tricks. That being said he is currently the most original hip hop artist out there because others are too lazy to master and enhance their craft. Somebody please hurry up and give him a run for his money because you can hear he is getting bored with the beats just by the format he is using to make the beats. Also Black is no Dilla, his kicks dont even sit in the same frequency range as Dilla’s. Probably something engineers at studio 1 have deliberately done. Blacks stuff is really thin and mid-rangy -Pro Tools, his live show is really entertaining though and he is a cool person. His music does leave you with a lacking feeling though – sounds contrived somehow- Rock is not the way to go.

Black IS secretly a little genius, he appears humble but he is not.
If he can humble himself a bit he should:
1.) Concentrate on the fact that we are already sold on him. Stop being fake and give a little more substance instead of what you think we wanna hear. Starting to sound a little manufactured. We like the observant space cadet – its what we beatmakers can relate to, you know when making beats is effortless because is is like a language, you know you hear all the elements separately, you know exactly what to do with barry whites voice to turn it into a bassline etc. It gets almost spiritual.
Hip hop is still there, but people dont contribute – so people buy the damn cds and quit downloading and bootlegging!
2.) Know that frequency of a sound relates to its pace in the mix. There is a reason a kick appears less than a hi-hat in a phrase. (do a bandpass then chop- watch the difference).

Black, I’m gonna give you 6 months to get your shit together then I’m gonna blow you out the water. You know what i’m talking about.
Magic frequencies -i’ll give you a head start! Mr Cross, You have been warned.

@4d beatmaker

lol i’m gonna stand still and let you do your thing over the next 6 months. come with your album and we’ll let the people decide if what you create can stand up to “album of the year” or “tronic”. hopefully you can create something that’ll light a fire up under me because you’re right, i haven’t been that inspired by a lot of music lately. so if you feel like you can do what i can do better, since i’m using “simple pro-tools tricks” (ha!), then i challenge you to prove it to me.

I agree that dedley medley and welcome are pretty dope as stand alone tracks. I hope the full lp provides way more, but what I’m gettign from the snippets has me agreeing with XXL mag rating. As talented as Daru is, there IS such a thing as overkilling the live drums. As an lp i’m not hearing much diversity in the sound (mind you, nothing is wack about individual tracks, just talking about the overall sound). An album can be cohesive across tracks without being the SAME across tracks. Even with live instrumentation (huge tip of the hat to Black for that alone) one can be diverse. If you need proof, see How i Got Over. There’s something about the over-reliance on the hi-hat and snare that has the drums drowning out whatever melodies there are on these tracks. I’d even just say on some basic engineering shit that the drums are too loud. Is this Daru’s album or Black Milk’s???

and 4D, i gotta concur. Black is no dilla. There is a lack of subtlety and nuance in AOTY that takes him out of that running. He’s never tried to wear that crown and heads need to stop pinning it on him.

Not sure if u guys are up on it, but over at http://www.npr.com, they have a review of the album along with streaming of the album in its entirety until the release date (9/14/10). Just type in “Black Milk” in the search box and click on the “First Listen: Album of the Year” link. You can even select to listen the specific tracks of the album. Kind of a different look for NPR, but welcome.

@Simona Peach: The reason it is titled “AOTY” is because it touches on Black’s experiences over the last 365 days since he dropped Tronic (as he explains on the intro to the album). I don’t think that is a particularly long time to put out an album of this caliber. BTW, Elzhi is on Dedley Medley, along with Nickel Nine. Do your homework next time you decide to criticize negatively.

@ 4d Yo how you going to shit on a dude who’s keeping Hip Hop dope, like all the true school greats that came before him. I say if you got some dope shit then you will get the respect too, but don’t shit on somebody who actually has skill, something even your boy Jay is even walking away from to do lil abc raps now, because thats what everybody is doing. This shit We hear today is straight funeral music, slow tempos and sad sounding mcs afraid to be happy about”being successful” and lame production to boot. I love dope beats and sick rhymes, and if people are mad at Milk for taking a page from Dilla, the same page Dilla, took from Premo, Pete Rock, EPMD, Marley Marl, And a host of others, then you need to step back and give this dude props, because thats called learning your craft, which all artist should be doing, but aren’t doing it because they’re full of shit……………….. sort of like you. LL said it best ain’t no future in frontin’.
Danz
Bk supports you Milk, keep the fire burnin homie

Woke up just to buy the album. It feels like Christmas. Damn man I firmly believe this is a CLASSIC. I love Popular Demand and Tronic but the vibe on this album and the composition is soooo damn smooth, hard hitting, and SOULFUL. Also, you lyrical prowess has risen considerably, hard work pays off.
Honestly I feel like I would be cheating your hard work by copping only one album. I’m buying 3 more copies for random people to give out. Good music has to get out there. Thanks for putting in work , its greatly appreciated. My goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats my piece, Peace
